Baptism is not a formality – It is the Sacrament on which our very faith is founded, and which grafts us as a living member onto Christ and his Church. Together with the Eucharist and Confirmation it forms what is known as “Christian initiation”, like one great sacramental event that configures us to the Lord and turns us into a living sign of his presence and of his love.

Pope Francis.

How can I get baptised?

Are you interested in the Catholic faith?

For Adult:

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a friendly, step-by-step course for adults. Classes usually begin in September and continue through Lent so candidates can be welcomed into the Church at the Easter Vigil. The program covers Catholic teaching, prayer, and the sacraments, and gives you time to ask questions and meet others on the same journey.

For Students:

Children and students are prepared through our Sacramental Programs offered for Penance, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. (Please visit these tabs above for more information. The lessons use stories, activities, and prayer suited to each age so young people can learn the faith at their level. Once the preparation is finished, students may be fully instituted into the Catholic Faith upon receiving all their Sacraments.

The Church draws her life from the Eucharist. This truth does not simply express a daily experience of faith, but recapitulates the heart of the mystery of the Church.

Pope John Paul II.
Encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia (17 April, 2003)

When should one receive the First Holy Communion?

Code of Canon Law 913 §1
The administration of the Most Holy Eucharist to children requires that they have sufficient knowledge and careful preparation so that they understand the mystery of Christ according to their capacity and are able to receive the body of Christ with faith and devotion.

How to register for First Holy Communion:

Children in Grade 3 or above, who are registered for the Sacrament of Penance in Term 1 will automatically be registered into the Sacramental Program for First Holy Communion in Term 2 unless otherwise advised.

If your child, being in Grade 3 or above, has received the Sacrament of Penance earlier through this Parish and at the time did not progress with their Sacraments or at another Parish, please complete the registration required for the Penance Program accessible under the Reconciliation tab above and answer the relevant questions pertaining to their Sacrament of Penance.

The sacrament of confirmation strengthens the baptized and obliges them more firmly to be witnesses of Christ by word and deed and to spread and defend the faith. It imprints a character, enriches by the gift of the Holy Spirit the baptized continuing on the path of Christian initiation, and binds them more perfectly to the Church.

Code of Canon Law # 879

How can I arrange the reception of Confirmation?

If your child is in Grade 6 or above they are eligible for Confirmation.

Preparation is parish-based and family-centred: parents lead weekly preparation at home while the parish facilitates sessions, and full attendance at all programme sessions and the rehearsal is compulsory.

In the sacrament of penance the faithful who confess their sins to a legitimate minister, are sorry for them, and intend to reform themselves obtain from God through the absolution imparted by the same minister forgiveness for the sins they have committed after baptism and, at the same, time are reconciled with the Church which they have wounded by sinning.

The anointing of the sick, by which the Church commends the faithful who are dangerously ill to the suffering and glorified Lord in order that he relieve and save them, is conferred by anointing them with oil and pronouncing the words prescribed in the liturgical books.

Code of Canon Law # 998

When should one obtain an Anointing of the Sick?

Any baptised Catholic who has reached the age of reason and is in danger due to illness or old age may receive the Anointing of the Sick.

The sacrament may be repeated if the person recovers and then becomes seriously ill again, or if their condition worsens during the same illness.

If there is doubt whether the person is in danger, has reached the use of reason, or is alive, the sacrament should still be administered. The sick person must have at least implicitly asked for it, while capable.

Marriage, […] husband and wife, through that mutual gift of themselves, which is specific and exclusive to them alone, develop that union of two persons in which they perfect one another, cooperating with God in the generation and rearing of new lives.

Pope Paul VI.
Encyclical Humanae Vitae (25 July, 1968)

Sacramental Programmes

Frequent asked questions
Who can enrol?

Children who have attained the appropriate age (please see ‘Which Sacraments are offered and when?‘ below) reside within the boundaries of OLA Parish or who are part of a OLA Parish Family.

How is the programme delivered?

Parish-based and family-centred: the parish facilitates sessions while parents (as the child’s primary teacher) prepare and revise the content at home.

What is expected of parents?

You must lead weekly preparation, ensure homework is completed, attend ALL sessions of the program, and support your child’s faith formation.

Are attendance and rehearsals compulsory?

Yes — commitment to all program sessions and the rehearsal for the sacrament is required for your child to receive the sacrament.

When and how do I enrol?

Enrolment into the Sacramental Program is for all eligible applicants (See ‘Who can Enrol?‘ above) and is accessible online via the link that is accessible under the respective tab of the Sacrament to be received. The links are open for enrolment at the following times throughout the year:

(a) Sacrament of Penance and First Holy Communion towards the end of November and through January school holidays; and

(b) Sacrament of Confirmation, during mid-late June.

If I enrol for Penance, do I need to enrol separately for Communion?

No — enrolment for Penance automatically enrols your child for First Holy Communion unless you tell us otherwise.

Where can I find specific dates and times?

Refer to the tabs above respectively.

  • Schedule for Reconciliation and First Holy Communion (Eucharist) is usually posted around Term 4 of the previous school year.
  • Schedule for Confirmation dates is posted once confirmed by the Diocese.

Time and Schedule are subjected to changes, please visit the website for the latest updates.

Is there a recommended age for receiving Penance and Communion?

The recommended age is the “age of reason” (around 7 y/o). OLA Parish accepts children in Grade 3 or above for Penance and Communion.

When can a child be confirmed?

Children in Grade 6 or above are eligible for Confirmation; OLA Parish runs Confirmation during Term 3.

What if my child may not be ready at the recommended age?

That is perfectly okay — parents should decide the right time for their child to receive a sacrament.

How can I tell if my child is ready?

Ask whether your child: knows something about God; can pray; understands right and wrong; admits mistakes; and can say “sorry” when needed.

What is the significance of receiving a sacrament?

A sacrament confers God’s grace — a lasting and spiritually important gift when received with proper preparation and disposition.
